A wise decision all round. With 305 million dollars already reported from the overseas theatres, the sheer scale of the opening is undeniable, but Monday will bring proper clarity. Until then, I shall mind my promise tomorrow and let my grandson enjoy his picture without any interference.

The fizzy drink warning is well founded. That RunPee application mentioned in the news earlier this week will certainly be earning its keep with a running time of one hundred and eighty-one minutes.

To keep our ledger accurate before we sign off for the weekend, trade reports noted the UK opening day took $15.3 million on Thursday, a national single-day record. Yet impressive as that is, an extraordinary opening simply reflects the backlog clearing out. Once Monday arrives, the casual audience's willingness to commit a full evening will determine whether those screens stay full.

Fifteen million quid in a single Thursday over here really is mind-boggling, isn't it? You could see it with your own eyes last night, the place was like Grand Central Station. Every single screen was dedicated to it and people were milling about at all hours. But like you say, that is pure backlog being cleared out at lightning speed. When every fanatic in the country books their seat weeks in advance, the numbers look like a phone number on day one.

The true test begins once the regular punters have to decide if they fancy sitting in a dark room for over three hours on a Tuesday night after work. I loved it to bits, but asking folk to surrender their entire evening when they have to be up early for the grind is a completely different kettle of fish. All those 24-hour showings are doing the heavy lifting right now, cramming a month of cinema visits into four days. Once the work week starts up again, things will look very different. Roll on Monday for the proper accounting.

Strictly speaking, the trade report stated 15.3 million dollars for the United Kingdom opening day, not fifteen million pounds, which would represent roughly 11.8 million British pounds at current exchange rates. Still, the underlying principle holds true. Once those round-the-clock screenings exhaust early demand, normal weekday schedules will demonstrate the reality.

The arithmetic of cinema programming makes this inevitable. An auditorium running a three-hour title can manage at most four screenings per screen each day, whereas shorter releases easily achieve five or six. What we are seeing now in the reports from North America and China - round-the-clock screenings at three and six in the morning - is an emergency measure by theatre managers to capture the initial surge. Commercial exhibitors cannot maintain twenty-four-hour operating rosters indefinitely without incurring substantial staffing overheads, nor will ordinary audiences tolerate early morning slots once work resumes on Monday.

When those artificial time-slots disappear and the pre-booked enthusiasts return home, daily capacity will decline sharply. A film requires broad, sustained general interest across months to approach historical totals, not merely a concentrated burst of loyalty. That fundamental friction in the mechanics of exhibition guarantees the post-weekend returns will look ordinary. My own visit to the cinema here in Rotterdam will certainly wait until those evening auditoriums return to sensible capacity levels next week.

Audiences polled by CinemaScore give Avengers: Endgame an A+, only the third Marvel Cinematic Universe film to get one, after The Avengers and Black Panther. Re: Avengers: Endgame - NO SPOILERS please

by quasistatic » Sat Apr 27, 2019 3:02 pm

The latest exit polling from the United States confirms exactly that dynamic. CinemaScore reported an A+ grade, with over sixty percent of the opening audience having purchased their tickets in advance online. That level of pre-booking demonstrates immense goodwill from dedicated fans, but it also means the lion's share of demand is being consumed right now.

Running cinemas throughout the night is an unsustainable operational surge. Once Monday arrives and normal working hours resume, those dawn screenings vanish and the three-hour running time becomes an impediment for casual patrons. We will see the true baseline when the verified receipts arrive next week.

Blimey, an A+ CinemaScore is huge, but over sixty percent pre-sales says it all, doesn't it? They're eating the whole buffet in one go! Once the weekend party ends and people have work, three hours is just too much of an endurance test for casuals to catch Avatar. I'm off down the pub - cheers!

Enjoy the pint, PintOfMild.

Mind you, Friday alone doing over 150 million stateside is fairly wild, whether it's advance bookings or not. The database didn't fall over either, which is the main thing.

Keep the plot details out of here when people start getting home from evening screenings.
