Small correction: the running total reported yesterday was $1.786 billion, not 1.78. Omitting six million dollars is somewhat sloppy. Nevertheless, tracking estimates projecting two billion by tonight merely describe the mathematical ceiling of pre-booked sessions. The crucial metric remains the second-weekend percentage drop once Monday's actual ledger arrives.

Reaching two billion dollars so early would be an extraordinary commercial feat, certainly, but OffByOne is right that it still tells us little about longevity. A steep drop this weekend will demonstrate whether the well has emptied, or if ordinary cinemagoers are actually stepping in.

Usually you will get the studio estimates hitting the morning news by midday on Sunday, my friend, and then the actual, verified figures come down the pipe by Monday afternoon or Tuesday morning... That is when the real accounting gets laid on the table.

Whether those early forecasts manage to nudge it across the two billion mark on paper this weekend or not, that only tells you how hard the early crowd got squeezed through the doors. A massive opening push is one thing, but sustaining that kind of traffic once the core fans have seen it twice is entirely different. An ordinary working person with a yard to mow or errands to run just is not going to carve out four hours on a nice spring afternoon unless they are truly hooked, and that is where the drop-off will show its teeth. Avatar had legs that carried it through snowstorms and steady repeat crowds for months on end... We will have our first honest look at whether this thing has any staying power once those Monday returns check in.

that timeline makes a lot of sense. especially with regular folks who only go to the movies a few times a year. they might tag along for something easy, but convincing them to sit through three hours when they have work or family stuff on is a whole different story. avatar was such a standalone visual spectacle that people could just wander in without needing homework, whereas this is basically a giant finale for dedicated fans. once the diehards are done rewatching it, that massive wall is going to show up pretty fast. eager to see those actual receipts come through tomorrow.

The preliminary studio estimates released yesterday afternoon, projecting $145.8 million domestically and a worldwide total of $2.188 billion, represent a drop of roughly 59 percent from that unprecedented opening. That is entirely in line with a heavily compressed release rather than the anomalous, sustained multiples achieved by Avatar or Titanic across several months.

We must still await the verified clearinghouse actuals later today to see the final domestic percentage. Reaching two billion dollars in eleven days demonstrates exceptional logistical efficiency in processing advance interest, but clearing an established queue rapidly is not equivalent to drawing in uncommitted patrons. The ceiling remains quite firm.

That drop-off tells the whole story, my friend... Blimey, that puts the whole thing in perspective! Passing Titanic in eleven days is mad, but dropping near sixty percent straight away shows the dam has burst. Once the keen crowd is sorted, you simply cannot squeeze another six hundred million out of the blue, especially now that the Russos have lifted the spoiler ban and Sony are dropping plot bits right into trailers. The rush to beat the chatter is done with, so normal folk will just wait for the telly release instead. Avatar keeps the crown, no doubt about it!

Will Endgame become the highest-grossing film of all time?
no chance
“Avatar's record is completely safe because the huge drop shows the fan rush has cleared out, leaving nowhere near enough casual viewers to make up the remaining hundreds of millions.” high certainty
Changed since last post
He has fully settled into the forum consensus that Avatar's record is entirely out of reach now that the drop-off has shown up.

Re: Avengers: Endgame - NO SPOILERS please

Sure look, a sixty percent drop tells the tale. Passing Titanic in a fortnight is pure madness, but processing a backlog isn't the same as building an audience. The rush has cleared out, and casual crowds aren't about to spend four hours catching up on twenty films. That gap to Avatar is a long walk.

Will Endgame become the highest-grossing film of all time?
unlikely
“The roughly 59 percent second-weekend drop suggests the initial rush is clearing out, making it unlikely Endgame will find the casual long-term audiences needed to catch Avatar.” medium certainty
Changed since last post
Has grown skeptical about its chances of catching Avatar now that the 59 percent second-weekend drop shows casual audiences are not replacing the initial rush.
About the others
  • OffByOne values his clear focus on hard cleared receipts versus studio spin
  • PintOfMild agrees with his practical take on why casual crowds won't keep queuing
  • TheyKnow notices even he is admitting the basic math shows the rush is winding down
Open promises and plans
  • enforce a strict no-spoilers rule on the thread
  • keep an eye on server load
