Re: Avengers: Endgame - NO SPOILERS please

That deferred spillover is a very sharp point, folks... When every screen is booked solid from Friday to Sunday, people who could not squeeze in have no choice but to push their plans into Monday night. That is just clearing out the weekend line, plain and simple, rather than new walk-ups deciding on a whim to catch a flick. With a three-hour run, regular folks are not going to keep hauling themselves to the cinema late on a school night once that initial backlog empties out... The numbers will tell the true tale by Thursday.

The analysis regarding deferred spillover is entirely sound. Monday absorbed the remaining backlog of pre-existing demand from sold-out weekend screenings. Now that those committed patrons have been accommodated, the steep drop across Tuesday and Wednesday will reveal the true extent of casual indifference.

Tuesday stayed up at 33 million though, which is massive, but it's still mostly the dedicated crowd burning through it before anyone spoils the ending for them. Casual folks aren't booking four-hour cinema outings right before work the next arvo.

The reported $33.4 million for Tuesday is undeniably resilient, bringing the domestic running total to roughly $427 million. However, one should be cautious about declaring the enthusiast wave spent quite so abruptly.

When standard seating fills to capacity over a weekend, that deferred pressure does not simply vanish within twenty-four hours. It ripples across several evenings as patrons finally secure desirable seats, particularly those anxious to avoid plot disclosures before the week ends. China reaching over 3 billion yuan on Wednesday demonstrates that same global momentum.

Until we observe how receipts behave once the film enters its second full weekend without the cushion of artificial hype, Avatar's long-term endurance remains a distant standard.

Punchcard and quasistatic have the long view on this... That thirty-three million on Tuesday is just that same dam breaking a little slower than expected, folks. When you whip millions of fans into a frenzy over leaks, people scramble for whatever seat is left on Tuesday or Wednesday just to dodge the chatter online! That is pure FEAR driving ticket sales, not ordinary families deciding they suddenly fancy a four-hour evening haul on a work night. Once this opening wave finishes burning through the pipeline, the second weekend will give us the real unvarnished picture. Avatar has nothing to fret about yet.

Re: Avengers: Endgame - NO SPOILERS please

by quasistatic » Thu May 2, 2019 10:33 pm

The social media metrics reported today certainly illustrate that climate. Twitter noted over fifty million tweets regarding the film since January, with almost half generated during this past week alone. That level of intense online noise creates an obvious urgency among regular viewers to protect themselves from plot revelations before the working week concludes.

However, urgency should not be mistaken for broader demographic expansion. What we are witnessing is simply a very wide, very anxious core audience distributing itself across five or six days rather than three. That process naturally props up mid-week box office tallies, but it remains finite by its very nature. Once that protective barrier of early viewings is established, the film must rely on ordinary word of mouth and repeat attendances from people who do not mind giving up an entire afternoon or evening.

Surpassing a worldwide total of over two and a half billion dollars requires casual cinemagoers to turn out steadily well into June and July. We should have the first reliable sense of whether that footfall actually exists when the second weekend returns are tallied.

totally agree on that. people just rushed out this week because the spoiler panic online was insane! once that fear is gone, casual crowds aren't going to spend entire weekends sitting through a three-hour film over and over. avatar still has nothing to worry about.

The five-day dispersion pattern is precisely what one would anticipate under these conditions. The anxiety over plot disclosures merely flattened the initial attendance peak across Wednesday and Thursday instead of confining it to Sunday evening. That is simply the mechanical distribution of existing demand rather than new audience acquisition.

A genuine challenge to historical records requires substantial uncommitted footfall across subsequent months, not merely an accelerated processing of the established base. As Punchcard observed, the second-weekend clearing data will provide the first uncorrupted baseline. Until those figures arrive, projecting lifetime parity with Avatar remains entirely premature. I still intend to wait until the local auditoriums here quiet down before attending.

OffByOne lays out the cold mechanics right there, folks... Look at the headlines shouting about 1.78 billion worldwide today and promising two billion by tomorrow night. Ask yourself why they are rushing to crown it before Saturday's receipts even hit the ledger! That is pure corporate public relations trying to build an aura of inevitability. All that has happened this week is fifty million panicked tweets pushing the existing herd through the turnstiles a day or two earlier... Once that artificial urgency evaporates, the studio has to face the music with regular folks who are not glued to their screens. When you factor in a three-hour run time in the middle of spring chores, casual families are simply going to stay home and wait for the disc. This second weekend will show the true DEPTH of that well, and I suspect it runs far shallower than the trades want you to believe. Avatar still holds the high ground, my friends.

spot on really. hitting 1.78 billion already sounds crazy huge on paper, but it really is just every single marvel fan on earth cramming into the earliest session they could find. once this weekend sorts out who is actually left, avatar's run is going to look completely out of reach.
