Seeing the US box office basically grind to a halt over Easter just proves people have to pick and choose where their cash goes. Between tickets, drinks, and snacks, taking the kids out for half a day is a massive hit to the wallet! You can do that once for a massive treat, but nobody's repeating that fortnight after fortnight. With the capped ticket prices in China and the clock working against extra screenings, there just aren't enough hours or spare dollars for Endgame to pull off an Avatar-sized run. The opening rush is going to look spectacular, but real life wins out.

When you funnel every eager patron into pre-sales on day one, you are mostly just emptying out the pool of viewers who would otherwise be showing up later in May. It makes for staggering numbers right out of the gate, sure, but those same people cannot purchase those very same seats twice.

Once all us eager beavers clear out this weekend, those cavernous halls will feel mighty empty. Anyone fancy doing some field research over a pint in Leeds Thursday night? Cheers!

Disney says Endgame will play in a record 4,600 North American cinemas, with shows from 6 p.m. Thursday, and US pre-sales are estimated above $120 million. Other chains are also adding overnight shows to fit the three-hour film. Source

You can't keep staff on their feet at 4 am forever just to squeeze an extra showing in. It's a quick sprint to hoover up the diehards, but once normal workweeks kick back in, that pace is completely unsustainable.
