If the hardware checks out clean, it is money well spent.

NASA chief Charles Bolden said Curiosity's wheels are starting to blaze a trail for human footprints on Mars, linking the landing to the president's goal of sending people to Mars in the mid-2030s. John Holdren called it the most challenging mission ever attempted in robotic planetary exploration. John Grunsfeld said NASA had shown it knows how to explore. Adam Steltzner fought back tears, and project manager Pete Theisinger asked the public to be patient: the team is in no hurry to start driving. JPL's newsletter reports chief scientist John Grotzinger saying that the $2.5 billion cost, divided among every American, comes to about the price of a cinema ticket. Source
ESA says Mars Express tracked Curiosity's signals for about 28 minutes and lost them, as expected, just before touchdown. ESA's stations in New Norcia (Australia) and Cebreros (Spain) also picked up the signals directly, 248 million km away. The data went straight to JPL. ESA's Paolo Ferri congratulated NASA and said the Mars Express team welcomes 'a new friend in the neighbourhood'. Source

Pete Theisinger is dead right to take it slow. You don't rush post-install checks on gear that far out of reach. We'll know what sort of value we got once the raw diagnostics roll in.

Grotzinger says the first scientific question is where this gravel came from. Colour pictures at higher resolution will come later in the week, once the camera mast is raised. Source
